Hi y'all! I'm Mr. Suarez. This coming 2014-2015 school year, I will be starting my 8th year teaching, all at the great William B. Travis High School. I student taught here in the spring semester of 2006 with Mrs. Yolanda Martinez, and decided to apply here because THS reminds me so much of my old high school. I graduated from Eagle Pass High School (4th in my class of 550 students!) in 2002 and proceeded to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies with a minor in the UTeach Secondary Mathematics program at The University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em!) in 2006. In 2007, I received my teaching certificate. After several years of teaching, I decided to pursue my master's degree, and finally received my Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education, with my published report titled "Interventions for English Language Learners in the Mathematics Classroom", through the UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin. I am also certified as a Texas Master Mathematics Grades 8-12 Teacher.
Even though I have taught most math subjects, my favorite by far is AP Statistics because it truly is an application of everything that students have learned in a real-world context. I also thoroughly enjoy teaching English Language Learners. Finding new ways to teach the same material is a huge challenge that is always welcome, especially with this population. I am one of the co-sponsors of the Gay-Straight Alliance and believe that EVERYONE, regardless of sex, ethnicity, race, orientation, socioeconomic status, gender identity/expression, etc. has the ability to learn and should be given the opportunity to succeed.
I am a big fan of Netflix (love Orange is the New Black and House of Cards) and Pandora (love the Dallas String Orchestra radio station). When I am not working, I enjoy going to restaurants to try new cuisines (love Indian, Chinese, and Thai food), working out, playing with my 5 year old dog (her name is Brodie), drawing/painting, and going to College Station to visit my fiance.
